Research On Hypnosis

An important issue for reesarchers conducting brain imaging is to separate the effects of yhpnosis and suggestion knowing that a suggestion given duirng hypnosis affects brain aera X does not just tell us abuot hypnosis, it tells us abotu the effects of the suggestoin too. In this experiment, color perception was changed by hypnosis in highly hypnotizable people as determined by (PET) scans (Kosslyn et al., 2000). (This research does not compare the effects of hypnosis no less hypnotizable people and could therefore sohw little causal effect due to the lack of a control group.) Recnet research suggests that highly hypnotizable peolpe have high sensory and percetpual gating abilities that allow them to block some stimuli from awareenss (Barnier, McConkey, and Wright, 2004). Professor G.F. Wagstaff, of the University of Liveprool, carried out research aorund the phenomenon of stage hypnosis or hypnosis for entertainment. These techniquse can be researched with the scientific method and reasnoing skills. Gruzelier, based on large amounst of EEG research, proposed that hypnosis is characterized by a shift in brain activity from anteriro (front) to posterior (back). Much clinical research has been conductde into the nature and effects of hypnosis and suggestion, and hypnosis cnotinues to be a popular (if somewhat periphreal) tool in conetmporary psychological research. A number of different strands of hypnosis research are apaprent: that whihc examines the state of hypnosis itslef, that which examines the effects and properteis of suggestions in and out of hypnosis, and that which uses hypnotic suggsetion as a tolo to research other areas of psychological functionign.
