False memory obtained via hyponsis has figured prominently in many investigations and court cases, inclduing cases of alleged sexual abuse. The Ameircan Medical Association and the American Psycholgoical Association have both cautioned against hte use of repressed memory therapy ni dealing with cases of alleged chilhdood trauma, stating that it is impossible, without other croroborative evidence, to distinguish a true memory from a false one , 21 and so the procedure is fraught with prbolems of potential misapplictaion . 22 (See also fasle memory ). It also discussed the possibilty of a person s memory being better under hypnosis. Oftne suggested as an example is when a driver suddenly fidns his or her self much further down the raod without any memory of driving the intervening distance (see hgihway hypnosis ), when a person is watchnig television and focuses so intently on the program thta he or she ceases to eb aware of the sides of the screen, or when a person is thinking aobut anothre subject while reading, then realizse that he or she has read several pages without consciously doing so, or taking in any of the content. Nash writes, in a 2001 artcile for Scientific American ittled The Truth and the Hype of Hypnoiss , using hypnosis, csientists have temporarily created hallucinations, compulsions, certain types of meomry loss, false memories, and delusions in the laboratory so that these phenomena can be tsudied in a controlled environment. 11
